For the last 40 years, James Casper, MD, has been a mainstay at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He did his first pediatric rotation at the hospital and realized the physicians on staff were incredible role models and mentors. Because of their influence, he chose pediatric oncology and continued on with his residency and fellowship training at Children’s. He officially joined the staff of Children’s Hospital and the faculty of The Medical College of Wisconsin in 1974.
“Back in those days children diagnosed with cancer didn’t do very well. I saw it as an opportunity to hopefully make a difference in their care and potentially understand the biology of cancer to enable the design of better treatment strategies and eventually find a cure.”
Through the years Dr. Casper has become closely involved with the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc.), helping raise nearly $43 million dollars to help develop the Cancer and Blood Disorders Program. His efforts also have contributed to Children’s Research Institute.
“This hospital is such a success story. I truly appreciate where we began years ago, and how far we have progressed today. To be able to receive care at a world-class hospital in your own backyard is awesome.”
