If there is one thing universal, it’s the desire to care for children – and Kelly Wu is a walking example. As a teenager, Kelly moved from China to the United States with her mother. Adjusting to life here was a challenge due to a language barrier and cultural differences, but after a short while she found her groove. She started school in West Allis, and at about the same time began volunteering at Children’s Hospital. She began by helping with mailings and stuffing envelopes, but once her English improved she became a hands-on volunteer, working with patients to help them feel more comfortable during their stay.
Kelly knows it’s not easy for the little ones to be in an unfamiliar place surrounded by people and machines, so she focuses on making the kids happy – reading, laughing, playing games or sometimes just listening. To her, a little extra joy can work wonders.
She volunteers for two simple reasons – because of her love for children and knowing that she helps make life a little better for someone during a difficult time.
But what truly is special to her is the joy she receives from the children in return. And it is this joy that uncovered Kelly’s life calling – caring for kids. Today, Kelly is studying to become a Child Life specialist, a professional dedicated to helping kids and their families cope with their hospital stays.
